A glimpse into psychotherapy

Rumors, stories, and mostly scenes from movies are what come to mind when a person thinks about scheduling their first appointment with a psychologist. Will someone finally tell me, a specialist, what to do? The question is well-known, and the answer “no” is usually quite disappointing. Will therapy solve my problem? Maybe… no one can answer with certainty. So what happens in the therapy room during psychotherapy?

The first thing that helps someone to bear in mind before their appointment is their goals, what they want to achieve, where they want to get, whether they want to change something or not. The mystery is usually accompanied by the fact that each person is different from another and has different needs. For this reason, what happens in the therapy room during psychotherapy is something tailored to the patient. Some need questions to be able to start, others have prepared everything very well and say them directly, but that’s one side of the story. On the other hand, every psychologist (a psychotherapist is called when they have followed and specialized in an approach such as systemic, psychodynamic, behavioral, etc.) has their own personal style, which is part of the way they work.

To the question “what if psychotherapy doesn’t suit me?” Here it is useful to keep in mind that one visit to one or even two psychologists does not represent the entire science of psychology. It is possible for two therapists to have been trained and to follow the same therapeutic approach, and the experience of a session with both to differ greatly.

Don’t hesitate to search, ask, and try different people and approaches. The time it will take for you to “get better” is proportional to your goals, the pace at which you want to work, and of course, how ready you are for it. However, always bear in mind that just as your problem took time to develop and bring you to your current state, it also takes time to be deconstructed.
